ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Katie O'Connell stood before the St. Johns County School Board and challenged the decision that removed her from Trout Creek Academy. Her remarks centered on a yearbook quote tied to a Fetty Wap lyric and a disciplinary outcome she believes never should have happened.
Months of work in classrooms, hallways and school events suddenly became secondary to a single line printed near the front of the yearbook. Reported by Action News Jax, O'Connell has maintained that the quote, "Everybody hating, we just call them fans though," was inserted without her knowledge and appeared only after administrators completed final reviews.
O'Connell told board members she never approved the lyric and never had a chance to correct the mistake before being placed on leave. District records reviewed by local outlets include statements from school personnel who said the quote was not present when final proofreading took place.
Letters delivered by the district informed O'Connell that she would be placed on paid administrative leave and that leaders were moving toward non reappointment for the 2026-27 school term. Access to district property was also restricted as the matter moved forward.
A separate dispute now centers on what happened during the production process. Emails cited by local reporting show Assistant Principal Samantha Sawruk wrote that the lyric was not visible during proofreading, while other interview notes reviewed by district investigators contain accounts suggesting O'Connell may have seen the quote before distribution.
Board members listened as O'Connell compared her treatment to other personnel matters within the district. She argued that far more serious workplace allegations have resulted in transfers rather than career ending consequences and told members, "This is your precedent, not reappointing me."
Her attorney, Jack Webb, has attacked the district's handling of the matter and argued that key evidence does not support removing her from leadership. Webb has also questioned whether proper procedures were followed before disciplinary action was imposed.
Parents remain divided. Some viewed the lyric as inappropriate for a K-8 publication, while others pointed to school performance metrics and teacher retention figures cited by O'Connell as reasons the punishment went too far.
Fetty Wap unexpectedly entered the story after news of the suspension spread. The rapper's team later sent flowers and a note wishing O'Connell well as uncertainty surrounding her future in St. Johns County continues.
