"Nothing But a Love Affair" CeeLo Green Feels Like Lauryn Hill Is His Dream Verzuz Matchup

CeeLo Green already knows who he wants standing across from him if he ever steps onto the Verzuz stage. During a recent appearance on Rickey Smiley's "On the Spot" podcast, the Goodie Mob veteran named Lauryn Hill as the only choice that truly makes sense.

Unlike some of Verzuz's most heated nights, Green pictured something far different. He described a possible pairing with Hill as "nothing but a love affair" and envisioned a night built on appreciation instead of scorekeeping.

Green said he would need somebody with a similar creative makeup. According to WBLS, both performers move comfortably between singing and rapping, a combination he believes makes the pairing feel almost inevitable.

Road miles from earlier tour stops also shaped his answer. Green recalled that he and Hill traveled together during their climb through the music business and described the longtime performer as one of the few artists capable of matching his range.

Hill received some of Green's highest praise during the conversation. He referred to the former Fugees star as "the queen" and spoke warmly about seeing her at a Kanye West event, adding another personal detail to a friendship that has lasted for years.

Green repeatedly returned to what separates Hill from most of her peers. He pointed to her ability to move between singing and rapping within the same performance and suggested that few entertainers bring the same blend of versatility to the microphone.

Verzuz has entered a different phase following its return under Complex. Recent matchups have renewed interest in the platform and opened fresh opportunities for performers to revisit signature records while longtime fans and first time listeners discover those songs together.

Neither artist has confirmed plans for a Verzuz showdown. Still, his comments painted a picture of two microphones, two catalogs and a celebration years in the making.
