Sen. Elizabeth Warren arrived at a Senate Finance Committee hearing carrying a quote Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made long before he joined President Donald Trump's administration.
The Massachusetts Democrat used that remark to challenge Bessent during a June 3 exchange focused on Trump's stock trading activity and financial disclosures.
Bessent had previously argued that unusually successful stock trades by elected officials should attract attention from regulators. Warren reminded him of those comments while pressing him about Trump's reported trading activity and potential conflicts of interest.
Financial disclosures sat at the center of the discussion. As reported by Senator Warren's office, she pointed to records showing Trump completed more than 3,400 stock trades during the first quarter of 2026 and argued those transactions deserved closer examination.
One example involved Nvidia stock. Warren noted that Trump purchased shares before his administration loosened export restrictions affecting the company, a move she said increased the stock's value.
Across the hearing room, Bessent repeatedly steered attention back toward Congress. He maintained lawmakers should address stock-trading restrictions within their own ranks before targeting the White House.
Warren refused to let go of the comparison. She reminded the treasury secretary that he had once supported restrictions on congressional stock trading and asked whether the same standards should apply to a president.
The exchange grew sharper as she asked whether the Securities and Exchange Commission should examine Trump's transactions. Bessent declined to endorse an investigation and instead returned to his argument that Congress should lead by example.
Committee members watched the back-and-forth unfold as the hearing moved between budget matters and ethics questions. The discussion became one of the most closely watched moments of the session.
No commitment to an investigation emerged before the hearing ended. The central disagreement remained unchanged: Warren argued the president's trading activity warranted scrutiny, while Bessent insisted Congress should focus on its own trading rules first.
