Saveion McConnell was 19 years old when a Lafayette County deputy's patrol vehicle struck him near U.S. Highway 50 before gunfire ended his life minutes later in Johnson County, Missouri. State investigators have confirmed no gun or other weapon was recovered from the scene.

Conflicting accounts of those final moments have only grown since the shooting. As reported by KCTV5, relatives say witnesses told them McConnell stopped during the pursuit, raised his hands and said, "OK, OK," before shots rang out.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol disputes that account. A spokesman said available body-camera footage does not support claims that McConnell's hands were raised when the deputy fired, though investigators have not released the video publicly.

Troopers say deputies encountered two men walking near the highway shortly before 4 a.m. One matched the description of a person sought in connection with an earlier shooting involving a 17-year-old girl.

McConnell ran when officers approached. Authorities say a deputy's vehicle hit him during the chase, yet he got back up and continued moving before the shooting occurred moments later.

No criminal charge had been filed against McConnell before his death. Court records reviewed by local media also showed no prior arrests or criminal cases connected to him.

Mourners gathered in Lee's Summit days later carrying balloons, photographs and handmade signs bearing his image. Hundreds attended memorial events as family members spoke about a teenager they described as athletic, loyal and deeply loved.

His mother, Michelle Washington, lost her only son. Family members said McConnell graduated from Lee's Summit North High School in 2025 and had been exploring trade programs and college opportunities before his death.

Ben Crump's law firm has since launched its own inquiry into the shooting. Attorneys argue the use of deadly force was unjustified and are demanding release of the body-camera footage that remains withheld from outside examination.

That recording now sits at the center of a case dividing witness accounts from official statements. Until the footage becomes public, the final seconds of Saveion McConnell's life remain locked behind competing versions of what happened beside a Missouri highway.
