Davoris Carter III was two days away from eighth grade graduation when a trip to the Jersey Shore turned into a nightmare. The 14 year old Philadelphia student entered the Atlantic Ocean during a school outing in Wildwood, New Jersey, and never returned to land.
Panic swept through a beach near Schellenger Avenue on June 1st after several young people entered the water. Three swimmers were pulled to safety while Carter, known to relatives as Peter, remained missing.
Seven days of searching ended with heartbreak. As reported by NBC 10 Philadelphia, authorities recovered the teenager's body near the United States Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May after days of rescue and recovery operations.
Shyara Hill received the call every parent fears. Her son loved hockey, played basketball and often talked about becoming a marine biologist.
Cold ocean water became one of the concerns weighing on his family. Hill said she arrived at the beach and immediately wondered why children had been allowed into the surf under those conditions.
Supervision remains a source of frustration for relatives. Hill told reporters she does not know who was responsible for watching her son and believes adults assigned to the trip should explain exactly what took place.
Lifeguards were not stationed on the beach when the emergency unfolded. Witnesses alerted a police officer to swimmers in distress, prompting a rescue that saved three young people but failed to locate Carter.
Delta School, where Carter was enrolled, serves students with special needs. School representatives have said six staff members accompanied six students and maintain that appropriate oversight was provided during the excursion.
Friends and relatives remember a teenager whose plans stretched far beyond middle school. Summer rowing opportunities, graduation ceremonies and dreams tied to marine science disappeared with his passing.
The search may be over, but the family's struggle has shifted in a different direction. Hill is now focused on learning who made key decisions that day, why her son entered the water and whether anything could have prevented a teenager known as Peter from becoming the center of a tragedy instead of preparing for graduation.
