Brandon Gill went on Fox News expecting to put Jasmine Crockett on the defensive over her comments about Karmelo Anthony. Instead, the Texas Republican found himself answering for his own words after a heated exchange that quickly saturated newsfeeds.

Everything circles back to Anthony, who was convicted in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf during a confrontation at a Texas track meet. Crockett has repeatedly picked apart how the case was viewed and argued that Anthony's self defense claims deserved greater consideration after the verdict.

Gill targeted those broadsides during a June 12 Fox News appearance. As reported by Atlanta Black Star, he accused Crockett of using race to inflame public opinion surrounding the case and referred to the Dallas congresswoman as a "race baiting thug" while criticizing her support for Anthony.

Blowback arrived within hours. Instead of focusing on Crockett's defense of Anthony, viewers began dissecting Gill's language as clips from the interview fueled workplace gossip.

Tempers flared over whether the phrase crossed a line. Some users labeled the remark racist, while others defended Gill and argued he was responding to Crockett's repeated focus on race when discussing Anthony and the sentence he received.

Crockett has remained one of Anthony's most visible supporters since the verdict. She previously described him as a frightened teenager and questioned whether he received the same consideration that others might have received under similar circumstances. Those statements generated reactions of their own and kept the case alive long after sentencing.

Anthony received a 35 year prison sentence for Metcalf's death. Supporters of the verdict point to testimony and evidence presented before the jury, while opponents continue to challenge how the matter was viewed by both the public and the justice system.

What began as Gill's attempt to criticize Crockett ultimately produced a different outcome. By the end of the weekend, much of the online reaction centered not on Anthony, Crockett, or the sentence itself, but on the phrase Gill used during the nationally televised interview.
