Jalil Richardson says he lost far more than his freedom after an artificial intelligence system wrongly linked him to a Florida vehicle theft. Months in custody followed before charges were dropped and evidence showed he was hundreds of miles away during the events in question.

An investigation into a stolen vehicle sale eventually led authorities to Richardson through facial recognition technology. An 85% match helped identify him as a suspect even though he says he had never been to Florida.

Criminal inquiry began after a buyer discovered a vehicle purchased in a Jacksonville parking lot had been stolen. Detectives later focused their attention on Richardson.

Mecklenburg County Jail became his home for roughly a month before extradition to Florida. During that time, his life unraveled while attorneys worked to prove he was not the person shown in the investigation, as reported by WSOC-TV.

Time sheets presented by his legal team showed he was at work in North Carolina when the stolen vehicle changed hands in Florida. Proof of his whereabouts took months to gain traction despite placing him roughly 400 miles from the transaction.

Charges were eventually dropped, ending an ordeal that Richardson says cost him his job, his home, and custody of two children. His mugshot remains online, creating additional challenges as he tries to rebuild his life.

Since his release, he has questioned how authorities reached their conclusion and believes greater scrutiny should have been applied before a warrant was issued. The experience continues to follow him long after the ordeal collapsed.

People close to him watched the situation unfold while he remained incarcerated and unable to return to daily routines. Richardson says rebuilding his reputation has proven far more difficult than securing his release because internet records and public assumptions continue to follow him long after officials abandoned the matter.
